“Thanks..” Kavier says, entering his room.

Karen bows. “I hope you’ll enjoy you’re stay, Mister Roche.”

“I’m sure I will.” he curves his lips into a charming grin. Her cheeks burn, and she almost faints.

I roll my eyes with disgust.

He glances at me. “You can visit if you want to.” he says.

“Dont count on it.” I sneer at him.

He smirks, and closes the door.

Karen looks up at me. (she was very short).

“Are you guys friends?” she has that concerned look on.

“No, we’re not.” I say sourly.

“Oh that’s good!” she smiles and starts walking.

Huh? I shake my head and decide to forget it.

She stops in front of a door. She sticks the keys in and opens it.

“Voila~. Here’s your room!”

It was a simple room. Beige walls, queen bed, bathroom, carpeted floor, etc. The normal single sort of bed room.

“I hope you enjoy your stay here Miss Trace!” she smiles cheerfully as I walk inside.

“Thank you, Karen. I appreciate it.”

“All righty then. Just call the front desk if you need anything. You’re allowed to roam around as well.”

I nod and she closes the door.

I stare around and decide to watch some TV. My fingers pick up the remote and turn it on.

“Adreianna Trace, and Kavier Roche are now participating as tributes for our district!” a woman with a pasty face, and pink hair says. Her lips heavily colored with red lipstick.

“Jeff, what are your thoughts on this? DO you think they’ve got the goods?”

The camera goes to a man sitting cross legged on a chair beside her.

He had a mustache, and wore glasses. Maybe 45 years old.

“Well first things first, they’ve definitely got the looks and the money to gain some supporters. Let’s start off with the young man. Kavier is it? Well he definitely got some dignity. I mean look at the figure on that kid! Definitely survival material-“

Suddenly I hear knocking.

I turn off the tv, and go up to the door. Not bothering to check at who it might be.

I regret it.

“Hey.” he smiles, amused, at my expression.

“What do you want, Kavier?” I narrow my gaze.

He leans against the door frame. “Can I talk to you for a second?”

“No.” Before I close the door he puts his foot in.

“Why are you mad at me again?”

“I dont need a reason to be mad at someone like you.” I sneer.

“And what type of someone am I being, exactly?” he says evasively.

“Yourself.You’re being yourself.”

He goes quiet.

I dont exactly know why I’m mad at him..

But I think its the fact that he scoffs at the most difficult things. I dont know that much but I can already tell how arrogant he is.

its so irritating.

“Can you please leave now?”

He slides his foot away from the door, and I close it.

I want to slap myself.

“Gaahhh.” I groan falling on the bed.

How could I say that? Im such a monster! I mean he HELPED me didnt he?

But then again… he might’ve been doing it so I wouldnt slow him down..

But-

I grab a pillow and try to suffocate myself.

There was another knock.

“Who is it?” I call bitter-sweetly.

“Its me.”

No…no.no.no.

“Open the door, sweetheart.”

I can hear my heart beating.

“N-no, thanks.”

She goes quiet on the other side.

“Please dont do this.” she says. “Dont go participate.”

I stare at the door. “I-I want to…”

I can hear her breathing, against the door.

“Why do you want to?” I could hear her struggling to keep her voice calm.

“Do you even want to know?”

“No…I dont care what your reason is, I just want to take you back home! Do you know how devastated I would be? To loose you as my only daughter?! Cant you forget about yourself for a second and think about others?!”

I guess that pushes my buttons.

“A-are you trying to say that I should feel sorry for you?!” I slam the door open to glare at her. “You wanna know something? You NEVER think about me. You dont care what I think! You just do what you think is best for me! Do you know how long I’ve been trapped in that crap of a house? My..whole..life! My whole frigging life!”

“Its was for your own good! I had to do it to keep you safe!” she shouts.

“IT WAS LIKE PRISON FOR ME!” I scream. “Every single day was like prison for me! Dont do this, dont do that! I HATED it. I HATED EVERYTHING ABOUT IT! Im already 15, but you treat me like I’m 5! I wanted to get out of there!”

“And you participating in the Games is an answer?! You’re going to die Ariana! You stand no chance in there!”

I grit my teeth. “You dont know how its like to be trapped. Because I’d rather die, than live another day like that.”

This shocks her, and she only stares at me with wide eyes.

“Goodbye mother.” I say and close the door.

It was quiet for a moment, and I bite my lip to keep myself from crying.

It wasnt like I was sad or anything…

I was pretty relieved.

“I didnt know you felt like that.” she says softly. “If this is your wish, I’ll let it be. Goodbye.”

I hear her walk away.

I walk towards the bed and lay down. I stare at the ceiling.

This is good… I feel better. I was able to pour out everything…

All of it was true.

I close my eyes and start laughing.

I’m happy.

“Kavier Roche.” her voice bellows across the auditorium. A spotlight hovers around the audience and stops in the middle section.

I squint to see clearly. A boy stands up from his seat, and makes his way out of the aisle towards the stage.

“There he is!” the announcer exclaims with such extravagance that I want to shoot her a glare.

She acts so ecstatic that its disgusting. Kavier finally makes it to the stage, and his face appears on the large tv screen.

His hair was jet black and brushed across his face. The features that stands out to me is his eyes. Very blue and aloof…

I feel a pang hit my chest, but decide to ignore it.

“Allright! Now for the female tribute!” she rips an envelope open once again, and takes out the golden slip of paper.

My heart starts to pound when she stares at the name, and looks into the audience.

“Adreianna Trace.” she says.

The spotlight hovers at where I am and all eyes stare at me.

I take a deep breath and stand up.

“Wait! NO! THAT’S A MISTAKE!” I hear mother holler from the balcony.

I dont bother to listen to her, and make my way out of the aisle, to the stage.

“NO! YOU SIT DOWN, RIGHT NOW!” she keeps shouting.

Soon enough her voice fades away.

The announcer gives me a sweet smile, as I walk next to her.

“Ladies and gentlemen.” she pauses dramatically. “I present to you, our tributes!”

Our faces pop out into the large screen.

Confetti pops out of nowhere and showers around. A sound of trumpets fill the air.

The woman next to me grabs my hand and drags me into this room, Kavier follows behind.

“Stay right here.” she closes the door that lead to the stage and goes into another door on the left wall.

It was silent.

I look at Kavier, who seems to have been staring at me.

Hm. He was pretty cool looking.. I guess.

He had a hazy atmosphere, and his eyes suddenly looked very aloof.

I can already tell he’s the silent and careless type of guy.

We just stare at each other for a second, until the announcer bursts out of the room completely changed.

“Well kiddies-” she looks at us a bit alarmed. “Did..something happen between you guys?”

“No.” Kavier says bluntly.

His voice sounds like … velvet..

The kind that could pull on the heart strings..

She turns her gaze to me, her brow raised.

“W-what?” I say confused.

“Nothing.” she opens the door she had come out from. “This way little munchkins.”

Kavier goes in first, and I follow behind him. It was a very narrow and very long hall. No doors.

“Go to the meeting room, which is a right turn down this hall, a left turn down THAT hall, another right turn when you see a splitting, right again when you see the black door, and down the stairs. The meeting room should be on your left.”

I stare at her. “Can you repeat-“

“Good luck!” she chirps, and slams the door close.

“Wait a minute!” I go to the door and turn the knob, but fail to make it budge.

“She..she locked it!” I exclaimed turning to Kavier.

He was already walking.

“Wait! You got all that?” I run to him.

“No, but I’ll figure it out.”

I flinch.

This guy…

I stare at him, as he keeps going down the never-ending straight hall.

I dont have a choice dont I?

I clench my jaw, and follow behind him.

It was quiet again.

“So are you ready for this?” he suddenly asks.

I feel that pang again.

Where is that coming from?!

“Uh, yeah. i guess.” I murmur.

I mean I wanted to be in the Games didnt I?

“I see.” he mutters.

I could hear the smirk in that voice.

Ugh, something about this boy makes me want to hate him.

I take the time to study him from his back.

He had a broad and firm figure. He was a head taller than me too.

We make a turn into another hall, but this time there were doors.

I inhaled some air, slowing down my pulse. I had forgotten to keep track of the time we’ve been walking.

If I keep this up, I’ll get dizzy.

We keep walking, and turn to another corner. Still the same looking hall, but not as long.

We came short on an end with one curving to the right, the other to the left.

Kavier went right, so I went behind him.

I hope we’ll get there soon. I needed to rest, but no way was I going to tell that to Kavier. He’s my enemy isnt he?

We walked in a straight hall once again, and my head started to throb.

I blink a couple times to make it go away, but it doesnt work.

It just got worse.

We go to another turn, and stop at a door.

STAIRS

It says on the sign.

“and down the stairs. The meeting room should be on your left.”

I remember her saying that.

Kavier opens the door and I follow behind him.

Yup, it was stairs allright.

Very long spiraled stairs that didnt seem to reach the end.

“How big is this place?!” I growl with frustration, trying to see the bottom.

Kavier is already heading down, with no hint of exhaustion.

This irritates me.

I take a deep breath, and start jogging down.

If I overpass him it wont matter. I know where to go when I reach the bottom.

So I pass him, and grab on to the railings.

He doesnt say or do anything different.

“Hm.” I frown, going faster.

I’ll get there soon, and once I do, I’ll stop and rest.

I kept going and going.

My heart starts to pound, and my pulse quickens.

My head already goes beyond headaches.

I know this isnt good, but I ignore them anyways. I dont show any sign of slowing down.

I turn behind me to look at Kavier. He’s still in his normal walking pace, not bothering to catch up to me.

I grit my teeth.

I’ll show him.I dont need anyone.

With this on my mind, I go faster. I can feel my hair drag behind me, and the cold railing against the tip of my fingers.

Im almost there..

Im almost there….

But suddenly my feet numbs, and everything blurs.

I couldnt see anything, but I knew what was happening. I was falling.

I lost balance, and was tipping over. The force of gravity pulls me towards the ground, and I can only imagine the sort of pain I’ll be feeling when that happens.

Something grabs onto my shoulders, and wrist.

And I stop falling.

Ha?

“Idiot.”

I dont even bother to look to know who it was.

“What the heck were you thinking?” he growls, pulling me against him.

I flick him away from me, and grab onto the railings.

“I-Im. fine.” I hiss, clutching onto my forehead.

“Yeah, sure.” he mutters, and yanks me away from the railings.

And before I know it, he flings me on top of his back.

“Hey! Let me go! Put me down!” I demand, grabbing onto his neck so I wouldnt slide off.

“No.” he says, and starts walking down the stairs so easily, as if I weighed as much as a feather.

I wish I could hit him, or struggle at the least, but my head hurt so bad.

And my body feels weak.

This sucks.

Not only is he doing this, but he knows how weak I am.

How easily I can be targeted.

I clench my jaw, and close my eyes.

Then…unfortunately, I fell unconscious.

~~~
“Hey, wake up.”
Huh?
I yawn and open my eyes, blinking.
At first, I was startled to realize where I was.
On Kavier’s back.
But I remember everything after that. My cheeks heat up.
I fell asleep..?! On his back?!
UGH!
“Its locked.” he says bluntly.
I look at the door in front of us.
“Is this the meeting room?” I stare at it.
“Im sure it is.”
“Wait, its locked?!”
“I just said that.”
“Then how are we-“
He kicks it. The hinges break off at the impact, and the door falls forward with a thump.
There was a woman inside. Her eyes wide at the sight of us.
“You idiot!” I start chocking the life outta him.
“I got it open didnt I?!” he hissed.
“You didnt have to-“
“A-are you guys the tributes?” the woman asks nervously.
 We both glance at her.
“Yes, we are.” I push myself off Kavier’s back.
“I’m Adreianna. And that’s Kavier.” I introduce. “Are you our trainer?”
She shakes her head. “N-no, no.-“
“I’m your trainer.” A man walks in beside her.
Wait..
“You’re…”
His slick hair, his green eyes…
He puts on a smile. “Nice to meet you both. My name’s Liam.”
The guy I told to put my name in the Reaping!
He turns to the woman. “You can go now Karen. Oh, tell someone to fix the door.”
Her face turns scarlet as she nods and leaves the room. Her nervousness was coming from nowhere.
“Im sure you have lots of questions.” he looks at me.
I blink, and feel dazed.
I was right though, he was very attractive.
“I’ll explain everything, so both of you sit down.” he points to the white cushioned couch.
Kavier goes ahead and places himself there, and I sit myself on the far side of the chair. Away from him.
“Liam” raises his brows at me before shaking it away.
“Im really sorry you had to walk all the way here. its supposed to be secretive.” he says. “Would you like some water?”
“No thanks. We’re fine.” Kavier says firmly.
I glare at him.
“Allright.. then..” Liam clears his throat. “Well we have much to do by tomorrow. Today we’re allowing you to say goodbye to your family, and pack some small things you want to bring. Tomorrow we head out.”
My heart starts to quicken. “Where are we going..?”
“To the Capitol of course!” he says a bit alarmed that I would ask such an obvious thing. “Tomorrow we head out at 6 am in the morning, at the train. You can ask as many questions at the ride to there as well. But, you’ll be staying here for tonight. When Karen comes back she’ll take you to where you’ll be sleeping. We’ll arrange some time for you to meet with your family. Do you guys understand?”
We nod.
He smiles at me. “Good.”
The Reaping
I walk around trying to locate a seat with a couple people following behind me.
All of them were bodyguards.
They’re sticking to me so closely and so cautiously that it was making me stick out like a sore thumb in this huge crowd.
“Please slow down, Miss.”
“Remember to breathe.” they tell me.
How could I FORGET to breathe?
“Im fine.” I say, holding in my annoyance.
This was the time of the Reaping. It was located in the Great Pirz. One of the biggest and grandest auditoriums in the world.
.
I was looking for that boy I had seen yesterday.
Hoping he had kept our agreement.
“Miss Trace!” someone calls. “Pleased to see you here!”
I turn around with a look of relief in my face.
But it turns out it was someone else. It was a girl with her hair tied so tightly that it made her skin stretch back, and her eyes pop out.
her dress was the color of pink that reached her knees, and frilled at the bottom.
She notices my disappointed expression ,which I dont bother to hide, and puts a concerned gaze on.
“Is there something the matter?” she asks.
I dont know why she speaks to me as if I’m an adult, she looks the same age as me.
“Oh nothing… Who are you again?” I crook my head, trying to figure it out.
She smiles tightly.
“I’m here from the Harvard family. I’m they’re eldest daughter. Im sure you have heard of me.” she curtsies gracefully.
“No, I’m afraid not..” I tell her apologetically.
Somehow, I think she takes offense when I said that, but it vanishes in a blink. A golden beauty smile replacing it.
“I’m Danica Harvard. Our family respects the Trace Bloodline very much. We acknowledge that you are next in your mother’s place no?”
The guards around me stiffen at this.
I look at them with confusion, and then at her.
“What do you mean?” I say, narrowing my gaze.
But suddenly the trumpets blow before she can reply.
“Welcome, welcome.” a voice echoes through the auditorium.”Please take your seats ladies and gentlemen.”
“Over here, Miss Adreianna.” the guards usher me into an empty spot, and i dismiss myself from the conversation.
Danica disappears into the crowd, before I can ask her some more on what she had mentioned.
Minutes pass and a woman comes into the stage. Her hair is red and tied into a big bun. She’s wearing a black long gown that drags behind her as she walks to the microphone.
“The time has come to select one man and woman from each district to do the honors of representing our 75th annual Games.”
The feelings I’m feeling at this moment was very wrong.
I’m nervous and hopeful.
Nervous that my name wont be there, and hopeful that it will be.
“What do you mean she’s part of it!? She’s only 15!”
“Yes, I know ma’am. But this-“
I heard a smack.
“Dont you ‘but’ me. My daughter is NOT participating in that game and that is final!”
I walked away from the door and sat on my bed.
The stranger had come an hour ago…and the argument had started just when he stepped inside our home.
I knew exactly what this was all about. Yet somehow, I couldnt seem to put a grasp on it.
Me?
In the Games?
Me…
Me..
I’m in the Games..?
“Leave! Get out of my house right now or I will have you taken out by force!”
my mother screamed.
“Ma’am please calm down. I understand how angry you are at this but every other district is going through the same thing. You’re daughter has to do this!” the man kept on.
“No she doesn’t and I’ll make sure of it! Now LEAVE!”
I heard a shuffling of footsteps and a slam of the door.
“Madaam is everything allright?” I heard one of the guard’s say.
“No! Please make sure that that man doesnt step foot in my property ever again!” she commanded. “Who let him in anyways?”
“He was part of the Government. We had no right to stop him…”
Once I tuned them out, I felt my heart starting to pound.
i get it now!
Quickly I slid on a white jacket, and pulled on my hoodie.
I slid the window right next to my bed open, and stepped out.
The sun was already setting which means the guards guarding the front of our house have moved to their second section, giving me a free space to land on from my room.
I took a deep breath and stepped out through the window.
My feet landing on a ledge 2 feet below. I stayed there for a couple seconds for my pulse to slow down, before doing one final leap.
The grass basically muted my impact on the ground, and I fell silently.
With another breath I jogged around the front lawn garden and towards the gate.
It didnt take long for me to see him. he was heading out.
Quickly I caught up to him before the guards from the gate could spot us.
“Excuse me.” I poked his back, and he turned around.
I was a head shorter than him.
he seemed surprised to see me.
I was surprised as well that he looked much younger than I expected.
Maybe 19 years old.
His hair was slick, and his eyes were purely green. Now that I mention it, he’s quite attractive.
“Are you the man who spoke to my mother a while ago?” I asked. Just to make sure.
He scrunched his brows and narrowed his gaze at me. “Y-yes..? Wait are you-“
“I want to participate in the Games.” I cut him off.
“Ah-” he opened his mouth but I silenced him.
“Listen, I dont  have much time to explain so please understand. My mother will be doing everything in her power to get my name out of the reaping. But I want you to do as much as you can to prevent that from happening. I know what position you stand. You can overpower her decision. Make sure I stay there no matter what, all right?”
He only stared at me, but I saw no hint of confusion so I took the idea that he understood.
“I’ll be going now then-“
“Hold on.” he stopped me.
“What? Hurry, there isnt much time.” I whispered.
“Why are you doing this?”
Somehow, the question startled me and I couldnt find myself to answer it.
He only nodded at this, and turned around. “I see. I’ll do everything I can.”
With that we both parted ways.
I took a deep breath and jogged the same way I came from.
Why are you doing this?
I dont know. I really dont know.
